Interpretation and Readings
We tend to believe that we perceive the world as it is. Yet memory is selective, sensations emerge only to quickly recede, and perception operates within frameworks shaped by language and experience. What we accept as reality, therefore, is less an objectively given world than a constructed image, continually mediated and reconfigured through memory, sensation, and interpretation. ‘Interpretation and Readings’, featuring works by Hansol Noh, Maya Makino, and Jongwoo Ahn, brings together three distinct painterly practices that examine how memory, sensation, and perception are formed, altered, and translated into visual language.
Hansol Noh focuses on the linguistic and visual systems that mediate our understanding of the world. Rather than treating written characters solely as vehicles of meaning, the artist approaches them as autonomous images and formal elements. Through this process, Noh questions how learned information and established conventions shape the ways in which we perceive and interpret what we encounter. Of particular interest is the moment when repeatedly encountered letters and symbols cease to function merely as signs and begin to operate as visual images in their own right. By examining the structures through which familiar information is passively received and interpreted, Noh exposes the mechanisms embedded within habitual perception. In the paintings, written forms oscillate between meaning and image, rendering strange the perceptual frameworks we have long taken for granted and inviting us to reconsider them.
Maya Makino attends to moments of memory awakened by intangible sensations: a scent, the sound of rain, or the stillness of night. Her work seeks to hold within painting the fleeting experience of a memory that rises unexpectedly to the surface of consciousness and disappears almost as soon as it arrives. Rather than reconstructing a particular scene from the past, Makino explores the sensory and emotional conditions through which memory comes into being. Built through subtle gradations of indigo blue and accumulated layers of relief, her surfaces evoke a depth permeated by time and emotion. They give delicate visual form to the lingering resonance of sensation and to the movement of recollection that resists precise verbal explanation.
Jongwoo Ahn explores the interval between memory and record. Combining photography, printmaking processes, and traditional materials, his work does not attempt to restore the past in its entirety. Instead, it traces memories that have been altered, fragmented, or partially erased over time. For Ahn, a record is not only a device for preserving the past but also a medium continually reinterpreted and reconstructed through the sensations and perspectives of the present. The layered materials, impressions, and traces that accumulate across his surfaces reveal both the inherent incompleteness of memory and the sedimentation of time. Situated between documentation and recollection, his work visualizes personal narratives that remain in a continuous state of formation and transformation.
Although the three artists begin from different conceptual positions, their practices converge in their concern with the processes through which the world becomes perceptible and memorable. Their works move beyond the representation of visible subjects to examine the conditions that make perception, remembrance, and interpretation possible. Language and convention, sensation and recollection, record and trace each structure human experience in different ways. Yet experience never remains fixed; it is continually reorganized through the shifting perspectives and sensations of the present.
Rather than offering a single, definitive meaning, ‘Interpretation and Readings’ asks how we see, remember, and make sense of the world. As viewers follow the layers of memory, sensation, and perception articulated across the works, they are invited to confront the frameworks through which they themselves apprehend experience. In doing so, they may come to recognize that the world they have regarded as familiar and self-evident is, in fact, the result of countless overlapping sensations, memories, languages, and acts of interpretation.
