FRAME OF TIME
시간은 모든 존재에 적용되는 가장 근본적인 형식이다. 시간의 흐름 속에서 발생하는 현상은 한순간도 머무르지 않고, 모든 순간과 현재를 기록한다. 디 언타이틀드 보이드에서 개최하는 ‘FRAME OF TIME’은 하지훈과 저스틴 오토, 두 작가가 흐르는 시간의 틀 안에서 자연과 인간이라는 긴밀한 주제를 각자의 철학으로 탐구하는 과정을 담아낸다. 구상과 추상이 중첩되고, 색채의 스펙트럼이 드러나는 화면은 작품의 시각적 밀도를 한층 높인다. 본 전시는 일상적 소재가 시각적 형식으로 변화하는 과정을 살피고, 작가의 세계관이 반영된 서사의 흐름을 조망하며 작품과 담화할 기회를 마련하고자 한다.
하지훈의 작업은 자연으로부터 출발한다. 그는 자연을 단선적 시각에서 관찰하는 방식을 배제하고, 시간의 흐름에 따른 풍경의 변화를 한 화면에 중첩한다. 이러한 방식은 자연이 환경적·물리적 조건에 따라 상이하게 변형된다는 근본적 질문을 제기하며, 이를 토대로 새로운 회화적 언어를 제안한다. 그의 풍경은 구조화된 형태와 중량감 있는 덩어리로 형상화되며, 추상과 구상의 경계에 위치한다. 작품은 표층적 시각 경험과 고정된 인식을 해체하고, 시각뿐 아니라 다양한 감각의 종합적 작용을 통해 심화된 미적 경험을 유도한다.저스틴 오토의 작업은 역사적 이미지를 재해석하여 인간의 조건과 집단 역학이라는 주제를 분석한다. 그는 사회적으로 구축된 권력 구조와 집단 심리에 대한 비판적 성찰에 초점을 맞추며, 과거에서 현재에 이르기까지 반복되는 편견과 분류의 양상을 드러낸다. 그의 회화는 단순 재현을 지양하고, 과거와 현대의 회화 언어를 호출하며 추상과 구상이 교차하는 구조를 형성한다. 오토는 풍부한 표현을 구현하기 위해 스프레이, 스크래핑, 스패튤러, 스탬핑 등 다양한 기법을 실험적으로 적용하며, 지속적인 재료 연구를 통해 회화적 깊이를 확장한다.‘FRAME OF TIME’은 구상과 추상이 교차하는 두 작가의 관점을 통해 일상적 소재가 새로운 서사 구조로 확장되는 과정을 제시한다. 중첩된 색채와 감각적 요소, 그리고 서사적 구성은 시간의 흐름 속에서 자리한 자연과 인간이라는 주제를 재고하게 한다. 전시는 시각적 감상에 한정되지 않고, 작품과의 상호작용을 매개로 세계를 인식하는 대안적 가능성을 탐구한다.TIME OF FRAME
Time constitutes the most fundamental framework governing all forms of existence. Phenomena within its continuum are in perpetual motion, with every instant inscribed into the present. FRAME OF TIME, presented at The Untitled Void, brings together Jihoon Ha and Justine Otto, two artists who interrogate the intertwined subjects of nature and humanity through distinct philosophical lenses. Their practices operate at the intersection of figuration and abstraction, where a broad chromatic spectrum reinforces the compositional and structural density of the works. The exhibition examines the transformation of quotidian subjects into visual form, analyzes the evolution of narratives shaped by each artist’s worldview, and facilitates direct engagement between viewer and work.
Jihoon Ha’s work originates from an engagement with nature. Rejecting reductive, linear modes of observation, he superimposes temporal variations of a single landscape within one pictorial field. This method foregrounds a fundamental inquiry into how nature is altered under shifting environmental and physical conditions, resulting in the proposition of a new pictorial language. His landscapes are articulated through structured forms and volumetric masses, positioned at the threshold between abstraction and figuration. Ha’s work destabilizes superficial perception and fixed interpretation, fostering an intensified aesthetic experience that synthesizes multiple sensory registers beyond the purely visual.
Justine Otto reinterprets historical imagery to interrogate the human condition and the dynamics of collective behavior. His practice centers on a critical examination of socially constructed power systems and collective psychology, exposing recurrent patterns of prejudice and categorization across historical and contemporary contexts. Eschewing direct reproduction, his paintings integrate the visual vocabularies of both historical and modern art, generating structures where abstraction and figuration converge. Otto employs a range of experimental techniques—including spray application, scraping, spatula work, and stamping—sustaining an ongoing material inquiry that deepens the formal and expressive capacities of his work.
FRAME OF TIME articulates how quotidian subjects can be expanded into new narrative architectures through the converging perspectives of two artists. The layering of chromatic complexity, sensory modulation, and deliberate narrative construction prompts a reconsideration of nature and humanity within the temporal continuum. The exhibition extends beyond the domain of visual appreciation, offering alternative modalities for apprehending the world through active dialogue with the work.
