Anxious Room

불안은 인간이 피할 수 없는 보편적 감각이자, 동시에 개인의 맥락 속에서 다르게 드러난다. 그것은 사회적 조건에서 비롯된 긴장으로, 혹은 일상 속에서 스며드는 감정으로 다가온다. 불안은 우리를 불편하게 만들지만 그 자체로 창조적 사유와 표현의 원천이 된다. 디 언타이틀드 보이드에서는 피터 레이븐과 이수진의 ‘Anxious Room’을 통해 이러한 불안의 양면성에 주목한다. 두 작가는 각자의 회화적 언어를 통해 불안을 단순한 고통의 상태가 아니라 새로운 의미를 만들어내는 동력으로 전환한다. 

피터 레이븐은 현대 사회 속에서 인간이 직면하는 존재론적 조건에 주목한다. 그는 정체성과 통제력, 그리고 그것을 잃어가는 과정을 통해 불안을 드러낸다. 그의 화면 속 인물들은 주체이자 동시에 피해자로 등장하며, 인간 내면의 모순된 상태를 시각화한다. 작가는 구체적인 서사를 제시하기보다 연출된 장면과 미장센을 통해 관객이 스스로 해석할 수 있는 여지를 남긴다. 그래픽 디자인과 영상 작업에서 비롯된 그의 시각 언어는 극적인 장면을 연상시키며, 사회적 기대와 내면의 갈등 사이에서 인간 존재가 마주한 실존적 불안을 탐구하는 시각적 철학으로 확장된다.

이수진은 일상 속에 스며드는 심리적 불안을 포착한다. 영화의 한 장면, 평범한 정물, 도표와 같은 무정서적인 이미지를 화면 속으로 끌어들여 감정의 불안정성을 조형적으로 실험한다. 인물의 일부만 드러내거나 정물을 초상처럼 다루는 방식은 개인적 경험을 보편적 감각으로 확장한다. 그의 화면은 긴장과 정적, 낯섦과 평온이 공재하며, 불안을 단일한 감정이 아닌 회화적 실험의 매개로 전환하며 새로운 시선을 제안한다.

두 작가의 작업은 서로 다른 층위에서 출발하지만, 불안을 창조적 에너지로 전환한다는 점에서 맞닿아 있다. 그들은 불안과 같은 감정을 단순히 부정적인 감각으로 머물게 하지 않고, 시각적 탐구의 원천으로 재구성한다. 관객은 두 작가가 구축한 장면과 사물, 그리고 화면 속의 고요와 긴장을 마주하며, 각자가 품은 불안을 회피하기보다 사유하고 수용하는 태도를 경험하게 된다.

Anxious Room

Anxiety is a universal condition—an emotion that no one can escape—yet it reveals itself differently in each individual. It emerges as tension shaped by social circumstances or as a subtle unease that seeps into the fabric of everyday life. Though discomforting, anxiety can also serve as a vital source of imagination and expression. The Untitled Void presents Peter Ravn and Sujin Lee’s ‘Anxious Room’, a dialogue that examines the dual nature of anxiety—its fragility and its generative power. Both artists transform anxiety from a state of distress into an engine of meaning through their distinct painterly languages.

Peter Ravn explores the existential conditions of being human in contemporary society. Through the loss of identity, control, and certainty, he exposes the latent tension that defines modern existence. His figures appear simultaneously as agents and as victims, inhabiting a liminal state between action and surrender. Rather than offering a linear narrative, Ravn constructs staged scenes and cinematic mise-en-scènes that invite the viewer’s interpretation. His visual language, informed by his background in graphic design and film, evokes theatrical moments of conflict and reflection—an aesthetic inquiry into the psychological and social dimensions of anxiety.

Sujin Lee captures the quiet, psychological unease embedded in the everyday. Borrowing emotionally neutral imagery—film stills, mundane objects, and diagrammatic forms—she turns them into compositional experiments that probe the instability of feeling. By revealing only fragments of the human figure or treating still life as a kind of portrait, Lee transforms personal experience into a shared sensibility. Her paintings balance tension and stillness, strangeness and calm. In her work, anxiety becomes not a singular emotion but a medium for painterly exploration, reframing how emotion itself can be seen and understood.

Though their practices begin from different sensibilities, both artists converge in their transformation of anxiety into creative energy. They refuse to leave anxiety as a negative affect, instead reconstructing it as a source of visual inquiry. In facing the scenes, objects, and tensions that these artists compose, viewers are invited to confront their own unease—not to escape it, but to contemplate and embrace it as part of the human condition.
