Forms of Becoming’
Forms of Becoming
A form carries traces of the time, relationships, and sensory experiences through which it has taken shape. ‘Forms of Becoming’ presents the work of Jeheon Shin and Jae Hyuk Han, two artists who take paper as a shared point of departure. Through their individual sensibilities and working methods, each has developed distinct material processes and visual languages. The exhibition examines how multiple presences and layers of time coexist within a single form, and how form emerges through the transformation of material.
Shin condenses memories of people, places, and moments into a single form. His memories are shaped less by outward appearances than by overlapping impressions of atmosphere, bodily presence, emotion, and surrounding landscapes. To translate these memories into sculpture, he employs a papier-mâché technique he has developed, building up paper pulp on panels and layering lines drawn in Conté across their surfaces. This process brings painterly qualities into sculpture. Through repeated acts of pressing, attaching, scraping, and adding material, emotion accumulates as physical traces on the surface. The indistinct contours of his sculptures reflect the way the body remains unfixed in his memory. The irregular lines of his drawings similarly register emotion and the movement toward three-dimensional form. His work reveals how perception is shaped by personal sensation and memory, as well as by relationships and experience.
Han explores new possibilities for form by breaking down and reassembling paper, reconsidering its conventional functions and meanings in the process. The paper absorbs pigment and is rearranged across the surface, acquiring new material qualities through the interaction of water, color, and time. As color seeps between pieces of paper, their boundaries blur. Processes of separation and recombination, absorption and drying build up a complex, layered surface. Han works with the properties of the material and allows chance to enter the process. The interaction between his intentions and the material’s own behavior leads the work in unforeseen directions, shaping his visual language. Time is integral to this transformation: it allows material changes to accumulate and new states to emerge.
From a shared material, the two artists develop distinct approaches to form. Shin layers paper pulp and drawn lines to bring bodies, objects, landscapes, and memories together in sculpture. Han breaks down and reassembles paper, allowing the effects of water, color, and time to accumulate within his compositions. In both practices, form emerges as different elements combine, change, and enter into new relationships. Each work holds multiple presences and memories, alongside the accumulated time and repeated actions of its making. By attending to these layers, ‘Forms of Becoming’ questions the apparent unity of form and reveals the material processes, temporal layers, sensory experiences, and relationships that constitute it.
