Who’s That Girl

디 언타이틀드 보이드는 2025년 5월 28일부터 6월 28일까지 ‘Who’s That Girl’을 통해 세명의 여성작가 Katie Hector, Mónica Loya, Nanhee Kim의 작품을 소개한다. 세 작가의 작품은 익숙한 현실을 비틀어 감각의 균열을 일으키고, 다소 불편한 정서를 자극한다. 이 불편함은 단순한 감정적 반응이 아닌, 일상의 익숙함 속에 가려졌던 감각을 되살리는 장치가 된다. ‘있어야 할 곳에 있지 않은 것’으로부터 오는 어색함은 통상에서 벗어난 다차원적인 해석을 가능하게끔 한다. 세 작가는 각기 다른 시선과 매체 감각을 바탕으로, 주변성과 현실, 개인적 서사와 시각적 상상력을 회화 안에 펼쳐 보인다. 이들은 각자의 방식으로 비현실적인 요소들을 일상의 장면과 병치하거나, 현실 너머의 감각을 시도하며, 일상의 틈을 드러내는 시각적 경험을 유도한다. 본 전시를 통해 관람자가 작가들의 세계관을 마주하고, 일상에 새로운 감각과 환기를 불어넣는 계기가 되기를 바란다.

이번 전시는 지난 2023년 ‘SOMEBODY’ 이후, Katie Hector(b.1992, USA)와 디 언타이틀드 보이드가 다시 함께하는 자리다. 헥터는 The Hole(NY, LA), Moosey(London) 등의 갤러리에서 전시하였고, Management(NY)와 NADA Art Fair에 참여한 바 있다. 그의 회화는 스쳐 지나간 주변 인물들을 소재로 삼아, 주변부를 과감히 삭제하고 인물의 얼굴만을 과장된 채도로 크롭하여 그려낸다. 옅은 물감을 반복적으로 덧입히는 행위는 캔버스와의 대화를 이끌어내며, 그 위에 쌓인 흔적은 시간의 잔상처럼 남아 있다. 그 결과 인물의 성별, 표정, 사회적 역할은 모호해지고, 현실에서 살짝 어긋난 듯한 초상들이 모습을 드러낸다. 헥터의 작품은 직접적으로 말하지 않지만, 인간의 고립과 분리에 대한 갈망, 그리고 친밀함과 슬픔이 공존하는 정서를 은밀히 암시한다. 감각적으로 증폭된 인물의 형상은 어느새 낯선 타인의 모습 속에서 관람자 자신의 감정과 마주하게 한다.

Mónica Loya(b.1990, Mexico)는 KÖNIG Mexico City를 비롯해 멕시코, 미국, 영국, 포르투갈 등에서 활동하고 있다. 그는 시각적 감각을 통해 일상과 주변 환경을 파고들며, 이를 어긋나게 병치시켜 데페이즈망을 연상시키는 화면을 구성한다. 스마트폰으로 포착한 장면들과 주변 인물들과의 일상은 작가의 손을 거쳐 현실의 맥락과 뒤섞이고, 모호한 경계를 지닌 새로운 풍경으로 재탄생한다. 그의 회화는 친숙한 장면과 감성의 보편성을, 위트 있는 구도와 선, 그리고 주로 사용되는 빨강, 파랑, 분홍 계열의 색감을 통해 낯설고 비가시적인 차원의 사건으로 전환시킨다. 작품을 수용하고 해석하는 것은 관람자의 몫이며, 그를 통해 관람자는 작가의 독특한 작업 세계에 현재진행형으로 개입하게 된다.

Nanhee Kim(b.1993, Korea)은 독일과 영국을 기반으로 활동하며, Moosey London을 비롯해 네덜란드, 대만, 미국, 벨기에, 아랍에미리트, 영국 등 다양한 지역에서 전시를 이어가고 있다. 그의 작업은 복합적인 이미지를 차용하여 다양한 방향성을 지닌 듯 보이지만, 그 안에는 일관되게 ‘모호함과 아이러니’라는 정서가 흐른다. 화면 위의 요소들은 유쾌하지만 어딘가 어긋난 느낌을 주며, 다층적인 상황과 이야기들이 겹쳐져 존재한다. 이 이미지들은 작가의 개인적인 경험일 수 있고, 사회적 통념이나 신화적 상징에 닿아 있기도 하다. 작품을 들여다보면 명확하지 않은 장면 속에서 이상한 익숙함을 발견하고, 그 기묘함을 일상의 상식으로 되돌리고자 하는 충동을 느낀다. 그의 작업은 열린 결말로 이루어진 한 편의 소설처럼 다양한 해석의 여지를 남긴 채 관람자의 내면에서 또 다른 이야기를 자극한다.

Who’s That Girl

From May 28 to June 28, 2025, The Untitled Void presents ‘Who’s That Girl’, an exhibition featuring works by three women artists: Katie Hector, Mónica Loya, and Nanhee Kim. Each of their paintings distorts familiar realities, introducing subtle ruptures in perception and provoking an unsettling emotional response. Yet this discomfort is not merely reactive; it becomes a tool that reawakens dulled senses, revealing what often remains hidden beneath the surface of everyday life. The oddity of things being “out of place” opens the door to multi-layered interpretations that resist the ordinary. Through distinct visual vocabularies and diverse materials, the three artists unfold layered narratives and imagined worlds that blur the boundaries between the peripheral and the central, the real and the imagined. Whether by juxtaposing surreal elements within mundane settings or evoking sensations beyond realism, they invite the audience into a space of perceptual dissonance. The exhibition prompts a moment of personal reckoning—an encounter with each artist’s perspective, and a renewed sensitivity to the textures of everyday life.

This exhibition marks a return collaboration between The Untitled Void and Katie Hector (b.1992, USA), following the 2023 exhibition ‘SOMEBODY’. Hector has previously exhibited at The Hole (New York, Los Angeles), Moosey (London), and has participated in shows with Management (New York) and at NADA Art Fair. Her portraits are based on fleeting encounters and overlooked faces, cropped to isolate the subject's head and intensified through saturated hues. By layering thin washes of pigment in a meditative repetition, she creates a dialogue with the canvas beneath, leaving behind ghostly traces that blur gender, expression, and identity. Rather than conveying direct messages, her work quietly gestures toward solitude, separation, intimacy, and sorrow. The result is a heightened, dreamlike portrait that reflects the viewer’s emotional landscape.

Mónica Loya (b.1990, Mexico) has shown at KÖNIG in Mexico City and exhibited widely across Mexico, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Portugal. Her work merges sharp visual instincts with everyday imagery, constructing dissonant compositions that evoke the surreal logic of dépaysement. Found moments from smartphone snapshots and scenes from daily life are reconstructed on the canvas in new, ambiguous contexts. Through witty compositions, fluid lines, and vibrant tones—often red, blue, and pink—Loya transforms the ordinary into invisible yet emotionally potent events. The viewer is invited to observe and complete the work through their evolving emotional engagement, stepping directly into her open-ended world.

Nanhee Kim (b.1993, Korea), currently based in Germany and the UK, has exhibited internationally, including in the Netherlands, Taiwan, the United States, Belgium, the UAE, and the United Kingdom. Her work draws from diverse imagery, appearing multifaceted on the surface yet unified through an undercurrent of ambiguity and irony. Her playful yet uncanny compositions feel intentionally off-kilter, layering multiple narratives and scenarios that may be deeply personal, rooted in cultural assumptions, or mythologically charged. Within these eccentric visual fragments, viewers may recognize something eerily familiar—an impulse to make sense of strangeness by reabsorbing it into the everyday. Her works unfold like open-ended stories, inviting interpretation while forming a kind of visual fiction composed of fragmented yet interconnected episodes.

‘Who’s That Girl’ moves fluidly between reality and imagination, rendering the familiar unfamiliar through the practices of three distinctive women painters. Beyond formal aesthetics, the exhibition opens new pathways for sensory and intellectual reflection, encouraging viewers to construct their own emotional and interpretive narratives. The Untitled Void invites the audience to step momentarily outside the routines of daily life, awakening new ways of seeing, sensing, and questioning their surroundings.
