V.O.W Solo Exhibition

ILYSM

디 언타이틀드 보이드에서는 4월 9일부터 5월 4일까지 V.O.W(Velvet Other World)의 국내 첫 개인전 ‘ILYSM’을 개최한다. V.O.W는 미국 로드아일랜드를 기반으로 활동하는 Josh Allen(b.1995, USA)과 Katrina Pisetti(b.1996, USA)가 결성한 듀엣 아티스트 그룹이다. 

V.O.W는 채도가 존재하지 않은, 철저히 배제된 색 범위 안에서 연극과도 같은 서사를 만들어 낸다. 바랜 과거를 회상하는 듯한 흑백은 고전을 떠오르게 하면서 동시에 훗날적인 이미지를 연상시켜 마치 시대성이 드러나는 연극을 동시대에서 연기하는 듯한 세련된 장면을 연출한다. 색상 스펙트럼의 양 끝에 위치한 흑과 백은 색의 혼란을 통제하고, 작품 속 실루엣과 레고의 표면과도 같은 헤어, 털과 가죽의 광택이 강조되는 의상, 장신구가 뿜어내는 특질에 더욱 집중하게 하는 장치와도 같다.

인물의 거개를 감싸는 구조적이면서 조형적인 의상과 황홀한 장신구는 신체의 변형을 일으켜 성별의 구분을 모호하게 하고, 감정을 가늠해 볼 수 있는 유일한 창인 눈은 관객을 응시하지 않고 빗나간 채 불투명한 감정을 내비친다. 감정 언어는 인물을 보호하는 외부적인 실루엣이 그 역할을 대체하는데, 얼굴에만 있는 것은 아니며 제각각의 특별한 체형과 몸짓 -V.O.W의 작품에서는 헤어, 의상 그리고 장신구-에 담겨있다. 과장된 신체의 특징으로 편협은 증발하여 규범과 관습에 구애받지 않은 인물로 묘사되고, 사회적 지위의 존재가 안일한 현실을 창안한다.

‘ILYSM’는 ‘I Love You So Much’의 약자로 음성, 제스처, 텍스트 등의 전달 방식에 따라 로맨틱하거나 귀엽게 혹은 무례하기까지 다종다양한 의미로 전달되고 받아들여지는데, 이는 현시대 전반에 걸쳐있는 현상일 것이다. V.O.W의 구상은 단일로 완결되지 않으며 각개의 주체적인 시각과 경험 혹은 비 경험적 생각들이 혼성되어 해석된다. 무성극같으면서도 멜로드라마 같고, 아름다우면서도 유머스러운 인물과 장면은 단편적 시각 유희를 넘어 보는 이들에게 실로 다면적인 감상을 포착할 수 있는 V.O.W만의 또 다른 세상이다.

From April 5 to May 4, The Untitled Void presents ILYSM, Velvet Other World (V.O.W)'s first solo exhibition in Korea. V.O.W is a collaborative artist duo made up of Josh Allen (b.1995, USA) and Katrina Pisetti (b.1996, USA) based in Rhode Island, USA. 

V.O.W. creates a theatrical narrative within a spectrum of colour void of saturation. The faded blacks and whites simultaneously evoke past classics and futuristic imagery, creating sophisticated scenes that feel like stills from a contemporary performance of some timeless play. Black and white, from their respective positions at opposite ends of the colour spectrum, function as a device to control the chaos of colour and draw our attention to the silhouettes, the Lego-like hair, the costumes with their glossy accents of fur and leather, and the singular materiality of the jewellery.

Structured, sculptural costumes and ecstatic jewellery wrapped around the figures transform their shape, blurring any distinction between genders, and even the eyes — the one window through which we might see some emotion — gaze not back at us but veer off to the side, any inner sentiment still opaque. Here, the language of emotions is replaced by an external silhouette that protects the figure within, expressed not just by the face but through body shape and gesture — and of course, in the work of V.O.W., through hair, clothing, and jewellery, too. These exaggerated bodily features effectively evaporate intolerance, portraying the figure as unconstrained by norms and conventions and creating a reality of complacency about the existence of social status.

ILYSM, which stands for “I Love You So Much,” is a phrase that can be conveyed and received in a variety of ways, ranging from romantic and cute to rude, depending on the way it is communicated, whether through voice, gesture, or text — likely a universal phenomenon of the modern era. The concepts that underpin V.O.W. do not find completion via any single approach; rather, it is best interpreted through a mixture of individual perspectives, experiences, and non-experiential thoughts. With hints of silent performance and also melodrama, these beautiful and humorous characters and scenes belong to another world that is entirely V.O.W.'s own, where the viewer is ushered past simple, short-term visual enjoyment into a glimpse of truly multifaceted emotion.
